Funding fairness with strategy and strength
Our story
The global litigation finance industry began in Australia in the late 1990s, driven by the need to level the legal playing field. At that time, parties with deeper pockets held a significant advantage in disputes. CASL’s co-founder, John Walker, helped pioneer a solution: funding legitimate claims to facilitate fair access to justice.
In 2020, John Walker and Stuart Price co-founded CASL with that same objective- to support claimants in pursuing financial redress where it might otherwise be out of reach. Before that, they had collaborated to establish the Association of Litigation Funders of Australia (AALF), a leading voice in policy and regulatory development.
Today, litigation funding is active in more than 23 countries, and CASL continues to play a leadership role in shaping the industry. We were among the first funders granted an AFS licence with Responsible Entity authorisation for class actions managed as investment schemes-supporting more efficient and cost-effective resolution of complex claims.
Our inaugural capital raise in 2022 secured $160 million, the largest dedicated funding pool of its kind in the Australian market.
Backed by one of the most experienced litigation funding teams in the country, CASL combines deep expertise, entrepreneurial thinking, and a clear focus: to empower legitimate claims through financial support and strategic insight.
What’s in a name?
CASL is pronounced like castle – a word that conveys strength, protection, and resilience
The castle imagery reflects what CASL stands for: support, security, and confidence for those pursuing legitimate claims for financial redress. Like a castle’s steadfast foundation in times of uncertainty, CASL exists to help people navigate complex litigation with strong resourcing behind them.
